The main reason Eric and I took Genevieve to Viva Vienna, an annual carnival in nearby Vienna, is for Chicken Satay and Funnel Cakes. However, we were excited for Genevieve to see and experience the rides. Of course we spent way too much for food and tickets, but every smile and satisfying bite of greasy food was worth it! Frankly, I am surprised Eric let Genevieve go on any of the rides. Evidently his parents never allowed him to go on rides that were set up and taken down for carnivals or fairs. He could ride them at amusement parks, however, because they were "safer." Maybe seeing Genevieve's eyes light up changed his mind, because they raced from one ride to the next until the tickets were gone. The giant slide was the highlight of the day for Genevieve. The question is why? Because it was fun or because it was pink?
At the window, she considers that She is not who she was, and she is not who she will be. She is transforming. She will be strong and resilient. She will be honest with herself and those she loves. She will have stories to tell AND when she does They will no longer shake her voice. -Kwame Alexander & NPR Community
